60 people injured in bee attack at Shivneri Fort in Maharashtra’s Pune district

Maharashtra Bee Attack: Close to 60 people were injured after a swarm of bees attacked tourists at the Shivneri Fort in Pune, Maharashtra, on Sunday, March 16, reported the news agency PTI, citing a forest official.

50 of the 60 people who were injured due to the bee attack were taken to a nearby hospital, according to the forest official cited by the news agency.

“The incident occurred near the Shivai temple at the fort. As per eyewitnesses, a group of youths hurled stones at a beehive, agitating the flying insects and triggering the attack,” said Pradip Chavan, a Range Forest Officer from Junnar.

Chavan said that all the 60 visitors sustained the bee stings, and 50 people needed hospital treatment.

“Fortunately, all were out of danger and were later discharged,” he said, reported the news agency. A similar incident occurred on February 19, on the birth anniversary celebrations of Shivaji Maharaj and 10 people were injured in the attack.

Shivneri Fort

Shivneri Fort, located in the tehsil of Junnar, is the birthplace of Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, nearly 90 kilometres from Pune city.

The Shivneri Fort is a 17th-century military installation that hosts statues of Jijabai and young Shivaji inside the fort. The centre of the fort is a water pond which is called ‘Badami Talav’.

To the south of the pond are the statues of Jijabai and a young Shivaji, and the first also has two water springs, called Ganges and Yamuna, which have water throughout the year, according to the official website of the Pune government.

The fort was used to guard the old trading route between Desh and Kalyan. In 2021 the location was added to the tentative list of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee under the stage of “Serial Nomination of Maratha Military Architecture in Maharashtra.”
