82% of Bodo accord promises fulfilled, rest in 2 years: Amit Shah

GUWAHATI: Union home minister Amit Shah announced Sunday that 82% of the commitments under the 2020 Bodo accord have been fulfilled, with the remaining provisions set to be completed within two years. He praised the transformation of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) in Assam from an insurgency-hit zone to a hub of development.
“Where once bullets were fired, today Bodo youths wave the Tricolour. This sight conveys a message to the entire country,” he said at the 57th annual conference of All Bodo Students’ Union (Absu) in Kokrajhar.
Shah credited Absu for playing a crucial role in fostering peace. “Without Absu’s involvement, the Bodo accord would not have been possible and peace would not have prevailed in Bodoland,” he said.
Under PM Narendra Modi’s guidance, Centre has signed peace agreements with nine insurgent groups in Assam, bringing more than 10,000 militants into the mainstream, Shah said. “Modi govt and Assam govt will fulfil every dream of Bodofa Upendranath Brahma Ji,” he assured.
In recognition of Bodo movement icon Upendranath Brahma, Shah announced that a major road in Delhi would be named after him. A bust of Brahma will also be unveiled in Delhi in April.
Shah highlighted govt’s efforts, saying AFSPA was removed from the entire BTR on April 1, 2022. Centre and Assam govt allocated Rs 1,500 crore for the development of the Sixth Schedule area, while Rs 287 crore was set aside to rehabilitate 4,881 former NDFB militants.
He emphasised economic progress, citing the inclusion of Kokrajhar’s mushrooms in Delhi hotel menus under the “One District, One Product” initiative and the geographical indication tags granted to over a dozen Bodo products.
He lauded the region’s hosting of Durand Cup and encouraged Bodo athletes to prepare for India’s potential bid to host the 2036 Olympics. Assam’s recruitment of 400 Bodo youths into its commando battalion marked another step in govt’s integration efforts, he said.
