A group of robbers pulled off a movie-style robbery at a downtown Los Angeles jewellery store and escaped with an estimated $10 million worth of items. The Los Angeles Police Department said the robbery occurred about 9:30 PM on Sunday at Love Jewels.
According to local media reports, the robbers entered the store by tunnelling through a very thick concrete wall from the next building. Police surveillance videos monitored by police showed the suspects breaking into the store through a hole they drilled.
“They managed to tunnel through several layers of concrete to reach the store,” the LA police department said. After grabbing the jewelry, the suspects escaped the same way they came in and were seen driving off in a Chevrolet truck.
The owners of the store discovered what had happened when they came back to work on Monday morning and found their shop in a total mess.
MILLIONS OF LUXURY JEWELLERY STOLEN, SUSPECTS STILL AT LARGE
The burglars took watches, pendants, gold chains, and other valuable items. Although police initially estimated the loss at approximately $10 million, the owner of the store said to KTTV that the stolen items might be worth over $20 million.
Video obtained by the news channel showed the sound of a drill being used and evidence that the robbers shut down the store’s security system by cutting the wires. In the shop, the safe was broken, jewellery displays were overturned, and an empty scotch bottle was left behind by the criminals.
The jewellery shop is popular for its vast array of gold products. From the store’s website, one could buy items such as a $1,200 gold rope chain, $200 heart earrings, and a $550 gold cross necklace. Videos uploaded on their social media sites feature the shop’s glass cases with numerous rings, watches, and necklaces.
The LAPD reported detectives are investigating the crime scene for fingerprints and DNA to try to identify the suspects. Police haven’t said how many people might have been involved in the burglary.
