Social media users are outraged after media reports of a US green card holder “violently interrogated, stripped” at Logan Airport surfaced online.
Fabian Schmidt, a New Hampshire resident and a US green card holder, was detained upon reentering the United States from Luxembourg last Friday. His mother, Astrid Senior, told Newsweek that he was stripped naked, violently interrogated, and later transferred to an ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement) detention facility.
Social media users have claimed that the US, under Donald Trump’s presidency, was “no longer safe” and non-US citizens should avoid travelling unless there are “compelling business reasons”.
A user also claimed that the new ICE procedures are the adoption of “Israeli fascist procedures”.
A user suggested, “If you are not a US citizen, avoid travelling to the US unless you have compelling business reasons!”
“USA is not a civilised country. It’s actually barbaric,” exclaimed another user.
“Tourism in the US is no longer safe. They will torture even permanent residents,” said a user.
“They do this to brown and black immigrants ALL THE TIME, but now that also happens to white people now you’re all losing your minds,” highlighted a user.
“Full adoption of Israeli fascist procedures,” claimed a user.
“Aside from the obvious fascist totalitarianism on display, this smells like some oracular, infallible ‘AI’ was put to use to track and target potential ‘terrorists’ who are such a menace…” said another user.
A user also claimed that the recent attacks by the ICE are in line with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “plan” to prove “American democracy is a sham”.
“Putin wants American democracy proven to be a sham – Trump is giving him that. The brutalizing is a plan,” the user said.
However, a few social media users justified ICE’s action and said Schmidt might not have followed the rules, leading to his detention.
“Green card is just a privilege not a right .. follow the rules,” a user said.
“He must done something to be treated like that. I’ve travelled a lot, and the only time I’ve ever seen immigration officers get rough is when people really act up,” said another user.
