The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has offered buyouts to its entire workforce, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. This makes the CIA the first intelligence agency to take part in a voluntary redundancy program introduced by former President Donald Trump for federal employees.
In addition to the buyout offer, the CIA is also halting the hiring of job candidates who have already received a conditional offer.
The offer, which allows federal employees to resign in exchange for about eight months of pay and benefits, had not been extended to most national security positions until Tuesday, likely due to the recognition of their importance to national security.
Some of these offers may be canceled if the applicants do not meet the agency’s updated goals. These goals include focusing on targeting drug cartels, addressing Trump’s trade war, and countering China, an aide to CIA director John Ratcliffe, speaking anonymously, was quoted as saying by the WSJ.
The move is part of Ratcliffe’s efforts to “ensure the CIA workforce is responsive to the Administration’s national security priorities, part of a holistic strategy to infuse the Agency with renewed energy,” a CIA spokesperson was quoted as saying by CNN.
This move is part of Trump’s broader plan to reduce the size of the federal workforce as part of a government overhaul aimed at increasing efficiency and reducing costs.
The news of the CIA’s buyout offer came just hours after Trump announced a proposal for the United States to “take over the Gaza Strip.”
