US President Donald Trump lavished praise on Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as she became the first European leader to meet with him to discuss trade after he imposed his tariffs.
Meloni’s visit to Washington today had been highly anticipated, especially amid ongoing trade tensions between the United States and the European Union. During remarks in the Oval Office, Trump praised his Italian counterpart and also accepted her invitation to Rome.
“I do like her very much,” he told reporters in the White House of Meloni, who was sat across the table from him. “I think she’s a great prime minister and I think she’s done a fantastic job in Italy.”
“I knew she had great talent, she’s one of the real leaders of the world. We have a good relationship, together and as countries,” he added.
