Indian-American man Kevin Patel shot dead in Chicago park

An Indian-American man was shot dead in Chicago’s Lincoln Park on Wednesday. The man was identified as 28-year-old Kevin Patel; he died while being treated for the gunshot wound.

The reason for this shooting remains unknown, as per American news channel, CBS News. The Chicago police said that Patel was shot at around 9:20 pm on April 16, in the 800-block of Chicago’s West Lill Avenue. It was only late last night that he was identified as Kevin Patel by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, reports CBS News.

A resident in the neighbourhood, Garret Moores, came across a wounded Patel on April 16 and rushed him to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Centre. However, he succumbed to the injuries while being treated.

GUNSHOT SHOOK RESIDENTIAL AREA AWAKE

The murder is being investigated by the Chicago Police, who are still unclear about what transpired on the night of April 16 in the high-end residential area.

Garret Moores, a resident in the neighbourhood, was alarmed at the sound of a gunshot and rushed outside to find Patel lying wounded on the ground in front of his neighbour’s house at around 9:20 pm on Wednesday.

He tried to contain the bleeding by pressing the gunshot wound on Patel’s chest with towels and called 911, the medical helpline.

In a statement to the press, Moores said that he was helped by two other people and that Patel was breathing and responsive on the way to the hospital. However, he died while being treated.

NO ONE ARRESTED, INVESTIGATION ONGOING

Witnesses have reported to the police that they saw a man and a woman fleeing the scene of the crime on foot towards the east direction.

A woman, identifying as Clara, reported to ABC7 Chicago that she saw a package where Patel was shot and “there was a sweatshirt on the ground inside the crime scene”. The whole area had been checked and roped in by the Chicago Police.

It is unclear what happened before the shooting, but officials on Thursday said police presence, near the area where Patel was shot and killed, will be increased.

Yesterday, a special roll call of officers was held at the site and Belmont Area detectives are investigating the case. Chicago’s 43rd Ward Alderman, Timmy Knudsen, has asked people with any information about Patel’s shooting to come forward.

Joane Moss, a Lincoln Park resident, spoke to ABC7 Chicago and expressed how the residents are in a state of shock and alarm because the area is “generally a safe and nice neighbourhood”.

It has been nearly 48 hours since the shooting and death of Patel, but neither have arrests been made nor have suspects been identified and taken into custody.

The US saw 47,000 deaths due to gun-related injuries, out of which 17,000 were gun homicides, as per the latest report by the Pew Research Centre. Gun violence is a “national problem”, as per the American Psychiatric Association, and even as the incidents of gun homicides have reduced in the US, it remains nearly seven times higher than those of almost every other nation in the world.
