iPhone's average prices are higher, but not because of tariffs

The current economic environment is being impacted, in one way or another, by the uncertainty surrounding Trump’s tariffs. The final results of these tariffs will be seen in the long term after normalization, but the initial moments are turbulent. Amid this situation, a report claims that the average selling price of iPhones is increasing. However, contrary to what you might believe, this is not due to the effect of the tariffs.

Average selling price of iPhones is increasing

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) shared a report revealing the latest estimates for the average selling price of iPhone devices. According to the report, the figure currently stands at $971. This represents an increase of $18 compared to $953 in the last quarter of 2024.

In this case, the impact of Trump’s tariffs has not caused this phenomenon. According to the report, the real reason is the discontinuation of the SE line of “affordable” iPhones and the iPhone 14 series. Apple discontinued the iPhone 14 devices after the launch of the latest iPhone 16 lineup. On the other hand, the company replaced the iPhone SE with the latest iPhone 16e, which is significantly more expensive. Consequently, fans of the brand have been forced to spend more on their mobile devices than before.

iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models losing popularity

That said, the situation could have been even worse. However, the decline in sales of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models prevented the average price from increasing further. The trend suggests that iPhone device users are increasingly cautious about where they spend their money. The new features of the iPhone 16 series are not attracting as much attention from the public as Apple had hoped. Furthermore, all the chaos surrounding some advanced AI-powered options, including the delay of the improved conversational Siri, hasn’t helped.

Given this scenario, people are opting to buy more affordable older-generation iPhones. A report from earlier this year even reflected an increase in used iPhone sales, outpacing new iPhone sales during that period.

This trend could continue with the launch of the iPhone 17 series. According to reports, Apple could experience supply chain delays for some key components. Specifically, the company appears to be experiencing issues related to the iPhone 17’s heat management system. This scenario could result in limited initial availability for the lineup. Therefore, fans of the brand may be prepared to either hold on to their current phones for a longer period or upgrade to previous generations.
