Kimbal Musk slams Trump’s tariff policies, calls them ‘permanent tax’ on Americans

Kimbal Musk, younger brother of tech billionaire Elon Musk, took to X to criticize President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. He described them as a “structural, permanent tax on the American consumer” and argued that Trump is becoming “the most high-tax American president in generations.”

Kimbal Musk is an entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is known for his work in sustainable food systems and urban farming.

“Even if he is successful in bringing jobs onshore through the tariff tax, prices will remain high, and the tax on consumption will remain the form of higher prices because we are simply not as good at making all things. A tax on consumption also means less consumption. Which means less jobs. Which in turn leads to less consumption. And then even less jobs,” Kimbal wrote.

“America has incredible strengths. We should play to those strengths and not be forced to play to our weaknesses. Same with the rest of the world,” Kimbal’s post concluded.

Despite criticism, Trump has ruled out pausing the sweeping tariffs he has imposed on countries around the world. Trump said, “Well, we’re not looking at that. We have many, many countries that are coming to negotiate deals with us, and they’re going to be fair deals. And in certain cases they’re going to be paying substantial tariffs. There’ll be fair deals.”

Elon Musk also shared a video on X featuring economist Milton Friedman discussing the benefits of free trade. The post is widely considered a subtle critique of President Trump’s protectionist policies.

During a video conference on Saturday, Elon Musk shared his vision for a “zero-tariff zone” between the US and Europe with Italy’s League leader Matteo Salvini. Musk expressed hope for a stronger partnership between the two regions, advocating for free trade and closer economic ties.

He said that, ideally, there will be a “zero-tariff zone in the future with a free trade zone between Europe and North America.”
