Nagpur violence: CM Fadnavis says PM Modi’s visit won’t be impacted, warns attack on police personnel won’t be tolerated

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Nagpur won’t be impacted due to recent violence.

Fadnavis made the remark while addressing a press meet in Nagpur.

On March 17, incident of stone pelting and arson were reported in several parts of Nagpur on that day over rumours that a ‘chadar’ with holy inscriptions was burnt during protests led by the (VHP) seeking the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb.

The Chief Minister also warned that he won’t tolerate attacks on police personnel and said that strict action will be taken against the perpetrators.

However, Fadnavis added that it was too early to say if there was a foreign or Bangladeshi angle in Nagpur violence.

“Stones were hurled on female police constables. Reports of molestation not true. It is icorrect to say Nagpur violence was intelligence failure. There is no political angle,” reported PTI quoting Fadnavis.

The Chief Minister also took a swipe at Congress party and said that a member of Congress committee visiting Nagpur is an accused in Akola violence.

Thirty-three police personnel including three Deputy Commissioner of Police-rank officers were injured during the violence in Nagpur on Monday.

A court in Nagpur has remanded 17 accused in the case in police custody till March 22.

Police have booked Fahim Khan, key accused in the violence, and five others on charges of sedition and spreading misinformation on social media.

On Tuesday, Fadnavis had assured the assembly that no one involved in the violence would be spared. He had also said the film “Chhaava” based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, depicted real history, which had led to the emotions of people overflowing.

The people are showing their anger towards Aurangzeb, Fadnavis had said in a reference to renewed calls from various outfits to remove the Mughal emperor’s grave from Khultabad in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
