Steve Martin on Thursday took to Instagram to announce that his longtime friend and “Only Murders in the Building” co-star, Martin Short, tested positive for COVID-19. He also shared that comedian and actress Maya Rudolph had contracted the virus after attending the SNL50 special.
“Maya had Covid. Marty has Covid. I wonder why? The SNL 50th Covid curse is real,” Martin captioned a photo of Short and Rudolph.
Martin played a key role in the 50th-anniversary celebration. He delivered the opening monologue, while Rudolph also took part in various sketches.
Steve Martin and Martin Short reschedules tour dates
Due to Short’s illness, Martin revealed that they will postpone two of their scheduled performances this weekend.
“Unfortunately, we have to reschedule this weekend’s sold-out Durham and Knoxville dates to 10/17 Knoxville and 10/18 Durham. So sorry for the inconvenience. I think we’ll be funnier then, anyway,” Martin wrote.
Colin Jost’s Ironic Joke
During the 50th-anniversary special, “Weekend Update” co-anchor Colin Jost made a joke that now seems eerily fitting. He quipped about the potential health risks of having so many comedians gathered in one space.
“Health experts are facing increased pressure this winter in the face of outbreaks of COVID, the flu, RSV, and norovirus, which they’re calling a quad-demic,” Jost said. “So we did the smart thing and packed every beloved entertainer over 60 into one tiny space.”
The anniversary special was a star-studded event, featuring performances from SNL alums like Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig, Pete Davidson, and Rachel Dratch. Celebrities including Tom Hanks, Pedro Pascal, Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, and Bad Bunny were also in attendance.
