Two Virginia Beach police officers shot and killed during traffic stop

Two police officers in Virginia were shot and killed late Friday night during a routine traffic stop, authorities confirmed.

The Virginia Beach Police Department confirmed the officers’ deaths in a statement posted to social media on Saturday. No other information was immediately available.

“We are unable to share much information at this time as this is still very much an active investigation,” the police statement said. “However, we want to assure the community that there is no active threat.”

The police department added that they are asking the public for patience as they work on the investigation and “grieve the loss of their own.”

A spokesperson for the police department did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

Governor Glenn Youngkin said he and his wife Suzanne are “heartbroken” by the line-of-duty deaths of two Virginia Beach police officers shot during a traffic stop Friday night.

“A solemn reminder of the bravery of those who risk everything to protect us and run toward danger,” Youngkin wrote on X. “The Commonwealth has their families and the entire VBPD family in our prayers and will be there for you.”

Naval Air Station Oceana also posted to Facebook Saturday morning.

“Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and colleagues of the two Virginia Beach police officers who were killed in the line of duty Friday night. NAS Oceana stands in solidarity with the VBPD. We grieve alongside you, honor their service, and remain steadfast in our support for those who protect and serve. “
