'404 error again': What’s causing hundreds of US government sites to go dark

Hundreds of US government websites went offline on Monday, including US embassy and consulates in India, after reports of Indian migrants being deported via military planes.
More than 350 out of nearly 1,400 federal websites listed by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) were offline as of Monday afternoon, according to an AFP review.
The review found that the affected websites included those of the Departments of Defense, Commerce, Energy, Transportation, and Labor, as well as the Central Intelligence Agency and the Supreme Court.

Is it a move to shrink US government?

This comes as the American administration pushes forward with its effort to significantly downsize the US government, with Elon Musk being entrusted with taking federal cost-cutting steps.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO is spearheading the department of government efficiency (DOGE). On Monday, Musk announced the shutdown of USAID, labeling the agency—which operates relief programs in around 120 countries—a “criminal organization.” Meanwhile, USAID’s website went offline, and employees were instructed via email not to report to their offices.

When the White House website showed error 404 day after Trump inauguration

As President Donald Trump’s team took over, the White House website saw major changes in January, including the removal of pages featuring the US Constitution and the previous administration’s policies.
The homepage now showcases a silhouette of Trump with the bold slogan “AMERICA IS BACK,” along with links to presidential statements, remarks, and newly signed executive orders.
Several pages including bio pages for former US presidents, including Republicans Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan, as well as Democrats Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton, had displayed error messages, creating a air of confusion among the citizens.
