Congress is facing consequences of its ‘own karma’, said MP CM Mohan Yadav in an exclusive interview with TOI’s Akhilesh Singh and Prasenjit Mund. Criticising the opposition for its devotion to a single family, he suggests it should have democratised its structure instead. Ahead of hosting an investment summit in Bhopal, Yadav exuded confidence in the state’s turnaround
You are hosting a global businesssummit, having recently organised regional business summits. In which direction do you see MP heading in coming years?
Since our govt was formed with the blessings of PM Modi-ji, our goal has been to position MP among India’s top states. The state already possesses favourable conditions, capabilities and competence; what remains is leveraging these opportunities – it requires sustained, long-term efforts. While summits often generate grand investment promises, concrete follow-through is essential for results. Aligned with the PM’s vision, we aim to contribute to India’s progress by doubling our economy and budget over the next five years.
You’ve travelled to various cities in India and abroad as brand ambassador. Has this been beneficial?
As the former chairman of Tourism Corporation and UDA, I’ve learned that results come only when you set a clear resolve and commit to it wholeheartedly. Modi-ji’s leadership as Gujarat CM showed how leading from the front drives progress. Personal responsibility is key to achievement. We’ve introduced significant reforms to enhance ease of doing business and trade. For instance, it’s now mandatory to process applications within 28 days – a process that once dragged on for six months to a year. The benefits of these changes are now evident.
MP has long enjoyed political stability and been a stronghold of BJP and RSS. Do you view this as an opportunity or a challenge, given the presence of several senior leaders in the state?
We function like a family, bound by mutual love and cooperation. Here, a person’s intent and mindset matter more than their position, and when everyone shares a positive outlook, work thrives. I’m fully aware that, while I serve as CM, there are many senior leaders that I deeply respect.
You secured a massive majority here, but it’s said that Congress, once a strong force, has weakened significantly. Isn’t this unhealthy for democracy?
Congress is reaping the consequences of its own actions. It lacks faith in democracy – leadership passing through the same family for four generations post-independence resembles a monarchy more than a democracy. Congress must reflect on this. In contrast, BJP fully embraces democratic values. Consider this: neither Narendra Modi-ji, nor I, nor Bhajan Lal-ji (Rajasthan CM), nor Mohan Majhi (Odisha CM) have family members. But Congress clings to nepotism, driving the public further away.
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee sparked a controversy by calling Maha Kumbh, “Mrityunjay Kumbh”. Your response?
I was deeply saddened by her remark. Mamata Banerjee-ji should apologise to the entire nation and the followers of Sanatana dharma.
